Hi everyone,
We have now reached the stage where we can concentrate on the SoCo Competition judging process and obtaining the services of the three independent judges.
I would very much appreciate it if you could recommend one or more experienced video makers from outside of the SoCo Region who you have used and were pleased with their resulting comments & decisions.
The process is based upon the one used by SoCo in 2016 & 2017 when both Pip and Lee were two of the three judges – they may wish to comment on the process itself. I should point out that I was very happy with both of them, and their colleague Graham Pitt, in that role and would have asked them again, but there is a feeling that we should look outside of the SoCo Region…hey ho for democracy!
To continue with the process:
Judges receive the discs at the beginning of August and have that month to complete and return their results to me. (Email is fine)
All entries are copied onto DVD Discs and sent to each judge for assessment.
The judges do not meet or confer so there is no travelling or cost involved for them
The judges are asked to assess each entry using a numerical scoring system (sample attached) and provide a constructive critique for each entry. When completed, they send the score sheets and individual critiques back to me. (Email is fine)
The results from the three judges are then averaged and a rank order determined with the entries with most points being placed 1st etc. The rank order will automatically identify in which of the 5 grades each entry is placed
The resultant ranking and grading for all entries are returned to the judges for them to review and confirm their agreement (or otherwise) that the result is “felt fair”.
Once the process is completed each entrant will receive a copy of each individual critique and grade for their film.
So, do you have a judge who you feel would be prepared to undertake the above role and who you would recommend.
Many thanks as always
Regards

Please find below a discussion I had with Pip on Sunday regarding Judging and the proposed Grade system and how they interact.

I think we will need to be careful how we rank people in the 1-5 categories.
I feel it would need to be based on the total points scored for their film (from the three judges) and not totally based on whether they were top or bottom of the scores.
Suppose the total you could score was 100 and the five films scored 60, 58, 56, 55, 50 – unlikely but lets go with it.
This would not necessarily mean that the film scoring 60 was a Grade Five or the film scoring 50 is a Grade One. It could be that they are all Grade 3.
So perhaps the grades should be in scoring bands and not just on ranking.
How the bands are scored is of course a separate problem!
Just a thought.
Cheers

Further on from this morning, I dug out the Judges scores from 2016 and
applied my suggested grades. (attached)
The result is interesting and I would be interested on how it strikes you.
It may be that the bands will require to be normalised to the judges
combined median to provide a better distribution as using the straight
calculation as shown, it is biased towards the top.
However, this could be considered a good thing as it might provide more
encouragement to those lower down.

I think this scoring / grading seems fine, especially as it has been “tested” on actual data from last year.
It’s a yes from me!
