I attach for your consideration, the outcome of our deliberations
regarding the SoCo 2019 Competition.
The plan is that once you have had the opportunity to comment, it will
go to David Martin for him to sign it off and from there to Pip for
publication. (not yet Pip). Hopefully I haveincorporated your thoughts
into the finished article.
Thank you for your continued support.

Competition Special
Revamped SoCo Regional Video Awards Competition for 2019
Closing date for entries 31st July 2019
By
David Martin
I am delighted that this year the SoCo Regional Awards Competition introduces a range of innovations with aim of making this the best ever for SoCo Competitors, with something for everyone.
Every person or club that enters videos into the competition will receive a DVD set containing all the entries. No travelling to see the show – it comes to your own TV or Club! Not only that, this way your video will be viewed across the region – (we all want our films to be seen)
No problem if you want to upload your entry(s) via the internet and pay the entry fee via internet banking, it’s available. How easy is that. Of course, if you wish to use the mail to enter your DVD/Blu-ray/Memory stick and pay by cheque in the usual way, that’s also OK with us.
Judging too has been changed. Each entry will not only be critiqued, but also graded using competition criteria, not set against other entries.
Judges will be sought from outside of the SoCo Region – there can be no better way of getting an honest opinion about your production.
The development of this years revamped Competition has been helped greatly by volunteers from Reading Film & Video Makers, Bristol Film and Video Society, Teign Film Makers Club, Isle of Wight Video Camera Club, and the Stonehouse and Stroud Video Unit. My special thanks to each of them.
So, the scene is set. Over the next few pages you will find more details, the entry form and the competition rules.
All that is left is for you to send your production and we are on our way. Please help to make this the best SoCo competition ever.
Happy film making
David Martin Chairman

Competitions. There are 4 competitions:
The SoCo Regional Award
Open entry for filmmakers and IAC affiliated clubs from within the SoCo Region. (Max running time 30 minutes) * This is the ideal competition for individual members and clubs to showcase their work of whatever genre. Entries from the three other competitions will automatically be entered into this competition.
Top of the Clubs For IAC affiliated Clubs within the SoCo Region to enter a film to represent their club. Film of the
Year might be a good start. It does not need to be a film actually made by the club (Max running time 30 minutes) *
Dolphin
A light hearted film – make the viewers smile. The winner of this category will be entered into the IAC Mermaid Competition (Max running time 10 minutes)
Baby Dolphin
A light hearted film – make the viewers smile. The winner of this category will be entered into the IAC Mini Mermaid Competition. Great opportunity for animators. (Max running time 1 minute)
*It may not be possible to include entries of more than 15 minutes in the Show DVD, in which case an extract will be shown.
Grading of Entries
New this Year: For the first time all entrants will not only be provided with comments about their production but the judges will also decide on which grade band it falls
Grade Guidelines
Level 5 An excellent production demonstrating high levels of creative and technical ability. It will be appealing to the audience and all round very satisfying to watch
Level 4 The film maker will have demonstrated a good grasp of the art of cinematography and have told a good story. Technically it will very good although there may be occasional minor lapses which let it down.
Level 3 Films at this level show a reasonable level of competency but lack sufficient creativity and/or technique. Attention to detail within editing, such as loose cutting, poor continuity or variable sound quality/mixing may occasionally be an issue.
Level 2 The film maker is on a learning curve and whilst some techniques are demonstrated others have yet to be developed. Work in progress, but on the way.
Level 1 There is much to learn and the basic skills have yet to be applied – the viewers interest is unlikely to be maintained for very long.
